A Beginner’s Guide to Body-Safe Sex Toys

Buying your first toy should feel exciting, not intimidating. Here’s everything you actually need to know to choose something body-safe and right for you — no jargon, no pressure.

1. Start with material, not features

The single most important thing about any toy is what it’s made of. Look for body-safe, non-porous materials: 100% silicone, borosilicate glass, stainless steel, or ABS plastic. These are non-porous, easy to clean thoroughly, and won’t harbour bacteria. Avoid anything vague like “jelly,” “TPR blend,” or unlabelled materials, and steer clear of strong chemical smells.

2. Think about what you actually enjoy

Before features and settings, think about sensation. Do you enjoy internal or external stimulation — or both? Broad, rumbly pressure or precise, buzzy contact? You don’t need to know everything; our Beginner Friendly range is chosen specifically to be forgiving and easy to explore.

3. Size: smaller than you think

Almost everyone overestimates. If it’s your first insertable toy, start small — you can always size up later, and a comfortable experience beats an ambitious one every time.

4. Rechargeable beats batteries

Rechargeable toys are quieter, more powerful, and cheaper over time. If you can, choose USB-rechargeable.

5. Waterproof is worth it

A fully waterproof (not just “splash-proof”) toy is far easier to clean and opens up bath and shower play. It’s a small thing that makes a big difference.

6. Don’t forget lube

The right lube makes everything better. Water-based lube is safe with every material and every toy — start there. Avoid silicone lube with silicone toys, as it can degrade the surface over time.
