Lube makes almost everything better — but the wrong type can damage your toys or irritate your skin. Here’s the simple version of what to use, and when.
Water-based lube — the safe default
Compatible with every toy and every material. If you own one lube, make it this one. It’s easy to clean, gentle on skin, and safe with silicone toys, condoms and latex. The only downside: it can dry out faster, so keep it handy for a top-up.
Silicone-based lube — long-lasting
Silky, waterproof and very long-lasting — excellent for shower play or longer sessions. The catch: never use it with silicone toys, as it can bond with and degrade the surface. Perfectly fine with glass, steel and ABS toys.
Oil-based lube — use with care
Long-lasting and great for massage, but oil degrades latex condoms and can be harder to wash off and out of fabrics. Best reserved for external play when you’re not relying on latex protection.
A few quick rules
- Silicone toy? Reach for water-based lube.
- Using latex condoms? Avoid oil-based.
- Sensitive skin? Choose a lube free from glycerin, parabens and strong fragrance.
- Always patch-test a new lube before a big session.
