Kink has a lot of vocabulary, and almost none of it is explained anywhere useful. Here is the plain-English version — no jargon, no gatekeeping, no assumption you already know.
Aftercare
What happens once a scene ends: water, blankets, a snack, quiet company, or simply checking in the next day. Intense play can leave people physically drained or emotionally wobbly, and aftercare is how partners look after each other afterwards. It is not optional politeness — experienced players treat it as part of the scene itself.
Bondage
Restricting movement, whether with rope, cuffs, tape or a partner’s hands. Ranges from a scarf tied loosely to full rope suspension. The universal rule: never leave someone restrained alone, and keep safety scissors within reach.
Brat
A submissive who plays by resisting — teasing, backchat, making their partner work for it. A style of submission, not a failure to submit.
Consent
An ongoing, informed, freely given yes that can be withdrawn at any point. Consent given under pressure, or while intoxicated, or on the basis of half the facts, is not consent. Everything else on this page depends on this one.
Dom, Domme, Top
The partner taking the controlling or active role. “Dom” is generic, “Domme” usually denotes a woman, and “Top” describes the person doing rather than a whole identity — you can top for an evening without being a Dom.
Edge play
Play that carries genuine risk — breath, blood, knives, heavy impact. Requires real training, not enthusiasm. If a guide like this one is where you are starting, edge play is not your next step.
Hard limit / soft limit
A hard limit is an absolute no. A soft limit is a maybe — something you might try in the right headspace, with the right person, or only up to a point. Both get discussed before anything starts.
Impact play
Anything involving striking: hands, paddles, floggers, crops, canes. Safe zones are the buttocks and thighs. Avoid the lower back over the kidneys, the spine, the neck and the joints.
Munch
A casual, clothed social meet-up for kinky people, usually in a pub or café. No play happens. It is how most people meet the community without any pressure.
Negotiation
The conversation before play: what you both want, what is off the table, safewords, health considerations, and how you will check in. Unsexy in theory, and in practice one of the best parts.
Pet play
Roleplay built around animal personas — puppy, kitten, pony and others. Often more about headspace, care and play than anything explicitly sexual. Tails, ears and collars are the usual gear.
RACK and SSC
Two competing safety frameworks. SSC is “Safe, Sane and Consensual”. RACK is “Risk-Aware Consensual Kink”, which acknowledges that nothing is truly risk-free and asks players to understand the risks they are choosing. RACK is the more widely used today.
Safeword
An agreed word that stops everything immediately. Many people use the traffic-light system: green for good, amber to slow down or check in, red to stop. If speech is restricted, agree a non-verbal signal — dropping a held object works well.
Sensation play
Playing with feeling rather than force: feathers, ice, wax, textures, temperature. Usually the gentlest doorway into kink, and often the most surprising.
Shibari
Japanese rope bondage, valued as much for its aesthetics as its restraint. Learn from a proper class or reputable tutorial — nerve damage from badly placed rope is a genuine and common injury.
Sub, submissive, bottom
The partner receiving or yielding. As with topping, “bottom” is a role for the evening; “submissive” tends to describe an identity. Neither means passive, and neither means powerless — the bottom holds the safeword.
Subspace
A floaty, euphoric, sometimes disoriented state some people enter during intense play, driven by adrenaline and endorphins. It can make someone a poor judge of their own limits, which is exactly why the top stays attentive and aftercare exists.
Switch
Someone who enjoys both topping and bottoming, sometimes within the same scene.
Vanilla
Non-kinky sex or people. Descriptive, not an insult — plenty of kinky people have very happy vanilla days.
